The Lady Creek and her Tides; Ebb and Flow

Artwork: Maria Morris
This is the Lady Creek and her Tides; Ebb and Flow, who push frail ships back and forth on her frothy waters, sometimes out of harms way and sometimes into it.

I started this as a quick pencil drawing, an idea as a present for a friends birthday, and then used black indian inks with a pen and brush over the top as the idea grew on it's own. There may also be some small photoshop wizardry involved.

Paper

1 year/ 12 months/ 365 days
Photography & Art Work: Maria Morris

This was made for my husband, Oisin, on our one year wedding anniversary. Your first anniversary is paper so I came up with the idea of making paper cranes that symbolise longevity, honor & loyalty. If you make 1000 you get to make a wish.

I decided to make one for everyday that we had been married. Originally the idea was to write a wish inside every crane and have one year of our lives documented through wishes. Simple wishes like 'I wish you happiness' or the more domestic ones of things like 'I wish you'd pick your socks of the floor'. I wanted a touching diary of our first year of life together, however things never work out quite the way you plan it and as I had thought of this idea six months into our marriage I found it hard to back track and fill in the days I'd already missed. Instead I thought that I'd make one crane for each day and give the final day to Oisin to make a wish onto and hang up on our wedding anniversary day itself, in a little ceremony.

The cranes are hung up in groups of 12, one for each month, and Oisin hung the central one on our anniversary. I still don't know what his wish was but it glides central, hovering inside the others as they swarm upwards toward the light. It had become much bigger then I intended or had thought about but quite lovely and delicate in it's own way.

The Silent Woods

Photos: Maria Morris

A little trip to spend some time with the family. Lots of fun and photo magic making to be had in the near by woods and lakes, and much turkey to be eaten for Thanksgiving means big smiles all round and very full tummys.

The wind up doll

Illustration: Maria Morris

So here was my idea. An illustration every day for one month. Sounds easy yes? Well no because I got a wee bit carried away and ended up spending all my day working on something that was meant to be a a 'short' exercise. Oh well. Still a work in progress but this is where I got to today. Hand drawn first then worked into with collage and developed on photoshop.

The wind up doll. Every morning her key gets wound up and sets her springs. She spends the first few hours whizzing around in a manic haze of creativity then slowly winds down throughout the day and dies every night, just to start again tomorrow. Fitting for my first day I think.

If you go down to the woods today...

Illustration: Maria Morris

This started out as a working drawing for the Matryoshka collection but I loved it so much that I worked into it further and turned into the tale of siamese twins who having run away from the 'circus of curiosity' got lost in the dark forest. One day I'll get round to writing their story down somewhere but for now this illustration sustains the story in my head.

Matryoshka; little mother dress

Illustration and idea for little mother dress. Inspired by parachutes, their shape, strength and how they unfold were all added to the cutting process and an idea of using the lining to bag up the outer and then release a  huge swarth of material to turn it from one shape to another was set upon.

The white dove sat in her tree...
The show stopper of the whole collection. Dangerous Dolly was the most amazing model for this and worked really hard to make this work the way it did.
